My daughter Gabrielle has been determined to learn how to garden these past couple of years. I love it because it reminds me of growing up on a farm and helping my grandmother with her garden. It also reminds me of this story I recently read about two seeds. I think you will like it:
Two seeds lay side by side in the fertile spring soil. Then the first seed said, “I want to grow! I want to send my roots deep into the soil beneath me and thrust my sprouts through the earth’s crust above me. I want to unfurl my tender buds like banners to announce the arrival of spring…I want to feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the blessing of the morning dew on my petals. And so she grew.
The second seed said, “I am afraid. If I send my roots into the ground below, I don’t know what I will encounter in the dark. If I push my way through the hard soil above me I may damage my delicate sprouts. What if I let my buds open and a snail tries to eat them? And if I were to open my blossoms, a small child may pull me from the ground. No, it is much better for me to wait until it is safe.” And so she waited.

Now, here are a few lessons we can learn from the seeds.
The first seed is motivated toward a positive outcome. It doesn’t have any internal barriers blocking it from its next level of success. It gets into the “action” of growing.
The second seed is motivated away from something that it doesn’t want and isn’t even aware of it. This subconscious behavior is holding it back from growth.
Which type of seed are you?
It could also be the reason you or your team doesn’t stay consistent.
This is a common problem I see with my clients. They reach a certain level of success, stop, and have trouble staying consistent.
Subconsciously, they are making decisions like the 2nd seed. And, most people aren’t aware of the behaviors and decisions that are keeping them from “growing” to their next level of success.
This is called “away from” motivation.
Being away-from motivated is not always a bad thing. It can sometimes be the motivator that puts you or your team into action, but long term, it doesn’t keep you motivated.
The problem with this type of motivation is that it doesn’t keep you going, so then you lose and become inconsistent. Or, in the example of the seeds, you get eaten.
Away-from motivation means your behavior and decisions are based on past experiences and since 90% of our behaviors are driven by our subconscious, most of the time there is not an awareness of the problem. Or, if you are aware, you simply don’t know how to stop doing it.
Toward-motivation moves you toward a positive outcome. The first seed was focused on moving towards something. It wanted to grow and have the sun on its face. It didn’t have internal barriers that held it back. Do you see the difference?
With one of my team clients, away-from motivation was a problem that was affecting his sales, and his commitment to the entire team. He was motivated by not wanting to make some of the same mistakes his father made. Even though this was a personal issue, it was affecting his performance at work and his relationship with his wife. It’s gotten him far in some areas but is holding him back in other areas.
It was causing all kinds of problems with him in regards to his sales and performance, but we were able to fix it very quickly. And he also gets to reap the benefits of a better relationship with his wife.
The absolute BEST way that I know how to fix this subconsciously sneaky problem, is to pull it out by the root. This fixes it for good so that it doesn’t keep happening. Like a weed, when you pull it out it gives the plant room to grow.
The ONLY way to pull it out by the root, is to:
- Identify the REAL problem
- Discover where the problem started or what caused it
- Fix it so that it doesn’t keep happening
This is the core of what I do in my 4-Hour Rapid Results program. When you pull it out by the roots, your decisions are clearer, you see opportunities that were already there, and you have more consistent results and ultimately the success you want.
